Unable to activate slider

  • Hi there,
I recently purchased the Linen theme, so that I could have the slider on my page. For some reason, I am unable to activate it. I have been reading through this forum, as well as online to try to get help. The advice mentions making posts ‘sticky’ in order to activate the slider but on my post visibility tab, there is no ‘sticky’ option, only the following:
    *Public
    *Password protected
    *Private

Please can you look at my page and advise what I need to do to activate the slider?
    Thank you.
    Marielle

  • Hi – I think I figured it out: My posts were all pages instead of posts.

Although the thumbnails are still not showing on the homepage. Are there steps I need to follow for them to show?

    Thanks,

  • Hello! I hope you had a great New Year!

It doesn’t look like you have any published posts. When you create a post, make sure you choose a featured image.

Also note, the thumbnails on the homepage are post thumbnails, so you’ll need to create posts rather than pages.

You’ll find documentation specific to Linen right here: Linen Theme Documentation

Please let us know if you run into any other hitches!

  • Hi Melissa,
Happy New Year to you. Thanks for getting back to me. I currently set my content to draft, to enable me to work behind the scenes on the issues I was having. Good to know that the post thumbnails are posts rather than pages.

However, when the posts were set to published instead of drafts over the weekend, they still were not showing as thumbnails.

I will look into this again later today and let you know if I have questions.

    Thanks again.
    Marielle

  • You’re welcome Marielle.

We’re around to help M-F (excepting US Holidays) and we’re happy to pitch in when you have a question!

  • Hi Melissa,
Hope you’re well. I have now published two posts, but they still are not showing as thumbnails. Is there something else that I need to do?
    Please let me know.
    Thank you,
    Marielle

  • Hello Marielle,

I’m so sorry for the confusion! Posts marked as Sticky that go into the slider, will not be displayed in the list of posts on the homepage. This is intentional, to avoid duplicate content. :)

When you start publishing more posts, you’ll see the ones that aren’t marked Sticky will show up in the post feed.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!

  • Oh, I understand now!

Thank you, Melissa. Hopefully my silly questions will also help others new to the template :).

  • You’re very welcome! And no question is silly, we love helping out! :)

  • Hi Melissa,
    Hope you are well.

I am making good progress using the linen theme, but i had a few questions:

How do I add a featured image as well as an image in the body text?
On each sticky blog post, i would like to have a large image before any text..is this possible or can the only image on a sticky blog post be a featured image? At present, I have a repeat image on the page (one from the actual text and one is the featured image: http://britchickny.com/2015/01/25/vision-board/
Please can you tell me how I remove the first image and still have it as a featured image?

Also, I’d like to collect the email addresses of people that sign up to my blog using mail chip. Is there a way to add this functionality?

Finally, is there a way to remove the data stamp from posts?

Thanks for your help! I thought it best to compile all the questions into one email :)

    Marielle

  • Hello Marielle,

I hope you had a nice weekend! I’ll try to offer some clarification on these questions —

Please can you tell me how I remove the first image and still have it as a featured image?

    And

Finally, is there a way to remove the data stamp from posts?

Neither are options within Linen, but both could be achieved if you have a Premium account/access to the CSS editor on WordPress.com. If so, the place to ask for help with these changes is in the CSS Customization forum.

Also, I’d like to collect the email addresses of people that sign up to my blog using mail chip. Is there a way to add this functionality?

Unfortunately, that kind of functionality is not possible with sites hosted on WordPress.com. There is more documentation about that here: Subscriptions & Newsletters

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance!

  • Hi Melissa,
    Thanks for your reply.

When you say neither are available on Linen, do you mean I can only have a featured image or body text image but not both? I will look into the Premium account/access.

I will also review the subscription link you sent across.

    Thanks,
    Marielle

  • Hi Marielle,

To clarify, a bit of custom CSS would hide the featured image thumbnail so you could add the photo in the post editor. It would also take a line of custom CSS to hide the post date stamp. :)

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Warmly,
    Melissa

  • Hi Melissa,

Thank you for all your help to date – my blog is coming along. I wanted to make sure I understood about the mailchip issue – because I would like to capture the email addresses of those who read my blog somehow, but from the notes in Subscriptions & Newsletters – it appears this is not possible. Is there anyway around this? It seems like a huge missed opportunity but I wanted to make sure I was understanding properly!
    Thanks,
    Marielle

  • Hi Marielle,

I’m sorry to say it’s not possible to embed a form on your blog on WordPress.com. You’ll find other threads about this topic in the support forums here:

    WordPress.com Support | mailchimp

It seems some people get around it by creating a MailChimp form and linking to it from their blogs.

I’m sorry that isn’t what you were hoping to hear!
