WCAG 2.0 standards and conformance of the Fortune Theme

Our library needs to conform as closely as possible to the WCAG 2.0 standards as of January 2021. We’ve conducted a review of our site to flag any changes that we’ll need to make (many of these relating to how we post content), but we have a question about the Fortune theme and how it conforms to the standards.

We would be grateful if someone could address this.

    With thanks,

    Rideau Lakes Public Library

The blog I need help with is rideaulakeslibrary.ca.

The theme has a basic accessibility support. Moreover, almost in every update, we try to improve accessibility of the theme. For instance, we have recently submitted a new theme update which improves accessibility of the post meta section. Currently, this update is under WordPress.com review.

Also, we’ve already started to work on a new update which will improve accessibility of the featured images shown in archive views and grid sections (the Grid template). We hope to submit this update to WordPress.com by the end of the next week.

The thing is that not everything depends on the theme. As you’ve mentioned in your post, content plays important role as well.

There are some things in the theme that do not conform to the standards. Some of the default colors of the theme might not pass the accessibility test because the initial version of the theme was not built to support those color requirements.

Right now, it’s a little bit hard to make changes to default colors because these changes can affect thousand of users who use the theme. Some users might not be very happy with such change.

Colors can be changed in the Customizer, or by using a custom CSS. I am always happy to help with a custom CSS if help needed.

I can see that your site uses custom colors. Just make sure they have a good contrast. You can use this amazing online tool to check contrast on your site: https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/

Plugins can also affect accessibility of your site by outputting its own HTML markup.

If you’ll notice any issues regarding accessibility in the theme, feel free to report them at https://themesharbor.com/contacts/

Accessibility issues have high priority in our to-do list.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Kind regards,
