Theme Templates not working

Good afternoon! I am having an issue similar to this person’s: link where when I try to assign a theme template to a page, nothing happens/it’s blank. This has left me at a bit of a roadblock, as I made an error on the original front page created when I installed the theme, and was trying to create a new one to start over only to find I could not. Uninstalling and reinstalling the theme did not help. I’ve tried everything I can think of to resolve the issue.

I’ve never had a problem like this before when using themes. However I did notice while looking over your documentation, that it looks a bit out of date? (It looks like the WordPress UI is different.) So I’m not sure if that has anything to do with any mistakes made in trying to install, or why the templates aren’t working now.

Any help you could offer in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The blog I need help with is remotelyspeakingcom.wordpress.com.

    Hello,
Thank you for reporting the issue.

“So I’m not sure if that has anything to do with any mistakes made in trying to install, or why the templates aren’t working now.”
    – It looks like the issue comes from a WordPress.com core.

To verify that the issue does not come from the theme, I’ve activated an official WordPress theme (Twenty Twenty) which comes with two templates by default: https://themes.trac.wordpress.org/browser/twentytwenty/1.7/templates

However, WordPress.com does not display a default WordPress option to select a template: https://snipboard.io/06SPIF.jpg

If we check the same theme in a self-hosted WordPress installation (WordPress.org), an option for selecting a template works fine: https://cloudup.com/crSTUuxRSiW

I am going to contact a WordPress.com team regarding this issue. I’ll keep you posted on this matter.

    Kind regards,
    Taras

It seems like the issue is not fixed yet at WordPress.com but I have notified a WordPress team about this problem yesterday.

    Thank you for your patience!

    Kind regards,

    Hello,

I’ve received an answer from a member of WordPress.com team regarding the template option.

The thing is that this option was moved to a different spot in the Editor at WordPress.com. Please see a screenshot: https://snipboard.io/JeQxNO.jpg

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Kind regards,
    Taras

    Hello!

    Thank you for the reply.

Odd, I don’t recall seeing that previously. I do see it now, and have tried clicking all of the templates, but even still, none of them are loading. It remains a blank page. :(

    Hello,

At the moment, I can see that your homepage is using a default template along with blocks to create layout.

Please note, for the theme templates such as Front Page and Grid Page templates, additional actions are required.

Front Page template is consisted of several separate sections:

    1. Introduction (Hero)
    2. Feature page #1
    3. Feature page #2
    4. Recent blog posts
    5. Recent testimonials
    6. Homepage-specific widget area

Here is a quick guide on how to create a Hero section: https://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/topic/pages-titles-displayed-in-between-banner-and-first-block/#post-157897

Other sections, such as Featured Pages, Blog Posts, Testimonials, can be configured in the Customizer: https://snipboard.io/FyaITH.jpg

Grid Page templates is consisted of child pages.

“However I did notice while looking over your documentation, that it looks a bit out of date? (It looks like the WordPress UI is different.)”
    – You are correct. Screenshots in documentation show a previous version of the editor. I am going to update them this week.

Please let me know if you have questions about a specific area on your site. I will be happy to help you with the set up of that section!

    Kind regards,
    Taras

So it looks like I got the hero section working, but I’m still stumped on the rest. I still do not have working templates for the rest of the sections.

For the grid section, are you saying that each square of the grid is a separate page? Is the text that shows in the grid from the Excerpt field? Sorry for all the questions! I’m used to templates being actual pages and blocks that you edit/put your information into/edit how you see fit. This is a little different for me.

And what about the testimonials? Again, I do not have working templates it seems, so how do I do those in this case?

Thank you very much for your help. :) I appreciate it!

I can see that you were able to set the Front Page template for your static front page. At the moment, it displays the Hero section and the Recent Blog Posts section.

To display a featured page, navigate to the Customizer:

    1. My Sites → Appearance → Customize → Theme Options → Front Page Template Options, and click Configure under Featured Page #1.
    2. Under Featured Page, select the page you created in step 1 from the dropdown list.
    3. Under Section Layout, choose a layout for your grid from the dropdown list.
    4. Click Publish at the top of your screen to save the changes.

    Here is a screenshot: https://snipboard.io/DZrnPO.jpg

There are two ways to display your content in these sections; you can either have a grid layout or a full-width layout.

A demo site displays a grid layout in the section. To display a grid, select a page which has child pages.

For example, the demo site uses Our Services page which has several child pages: https://snipboard.io/2VPiqB.jpg

Here is a guide on how to create child pages in WordPress: https://wordpress.com/support/pages/page-options/#parent-page

Note, you can also use a regular page (full-width) for the Featured Page section. And then just use the Columns block to create a grid on your selected page.

“Sorry for all the questions! I’m used to templates being actual pages and blocks that you edit/put your information into/edit how you see fit. This is a little different for me.”
    – No worries! You can ask me as many questions as you need to set up your site :)

These templates were introduced in the theme before the Block editor. The Classic editor did not have a power to create such layouts, so we needed to use custom templates along with the settings from the Customizer to provide such layouts.

Currently, the Block editor does not provide all needed blocks to fully replicate current custom templates but it should change in upcoming WordPress releases (5.8 or 5.9).

Once, the Block editor will provide all needed blocks, it will be possible to create layouts using blocks only.

    “And what about the testimonials?”
    – First of all, make sure your site has testimonials: https://wordpress.com/support/testimonials/#add-and-manage-testimonials

Once testimonials are added to your site, navigate to the Customizer:

    1. My Sites → Appearance → Customize → Theme Options → Front Page Template Options, and click Configure under Testimonials.
    2. Check Display Testimonials.
    3. Specify how many testimonials you want to show per page under the Number of testimonials to show label. Your recent testimonials will be displayed in two columns.
    4. By default, this section displays the title “Testimonials” above the testimonials. You can edit this by adding your own title. My Sites → Appearance → Customize → Testimonials and type your own title into the text field under Testimonial Page Title.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Kind regards,
    Taras
