Theme Formatting Options Missing

    Hi

I’ve noticed that a number of the edit or compose options no-longer include the portfolio theme formatting options. These include “Edit this page” at the bottom of a page and the “Edit” which appears bottom right of the screen after you click “view page” (after editing). Blog posts similarly do not have the theme formatting options either.

It does however work when pages and posts are opened from the dashboard.

I’d be grateful if this could be investigated.

    Kind Regards,

    Stewart

The blog I need help with is: kelpscotland.com

    Hi Stewart,

What you’re likely seeing is the difference between the new WordPress.com editor and the classic editor. Unfortunately, the Portfolio theme formatting options are not compatible with the new editor, so you’ll have to open them from the dashboard to make use of them.

Let us know if you have any other questions about this!

    Hi Melissa

Yes, that makes sense. Do you not update themes to retain compatibility with changes on wordpress.com?

The Portfolio theme formatting options are not compatible with the new editor. The way it works is fully compatible with self-hosted/WordPress.org though.

It’s actually not possible to do at this point. :(

The WordPress.com team doesn’t allow custom buttons or meta boxes in the new page editor, so if we wanted to retain compatibility, I suppose we’d have to remove those features, unfortunately.

Thanks Melissa. Therefore it seems that the new editor doesn’t work with probably all premium themes (on wordpress.com). It does seem weird that wordpress.com offer premium themes for sale, but seem to inadvertently be making them less convenient to use. Have the theme developers raised this with wordpress.com?

You can be sure that there are many folks who are not fans of the new editor. :)

WordPress.com is still evolving and the new editor is (from what we understand), still a work-in-progress.

If you have feedback you’d like to share with the WordPress.com team, I would suggest you post in the Ideas forum.
