Sizing Featured Image
Hi. When Outspoken displays the featured image for a post in one of the HomePage widgets, it will crop the image as well as resize it to fit nicely in the widgets’ frame. What proportion and pixel dimension should the featured image be so that it will not be cropped and so that it can be resized nicely given the size of the frame on the display device?
I have seen in other posts on this forum that: “Demo page uses default theme and big slider is in default size – 1112x632px.”, and this question is along the same lines but focusing on how the featured image will be cropped or resized outside the context of its potential use in the Big Slider.
The blog I need help with is thebuckthornman.com.
hmmm… it automatically added “The blog I need help with is thebuckthornman.com.” I didn’t notice that. The blog I need help on is Pati Holman’s blog at http://www.patiholman.com. The site is currently under construction and is private. If you need to see the issue demonstrated on her site, let me know and we’ll open it up.
We compared the original image to the cropped image in the Homepage Highlights Widget. The original was taller than wide 3264x2448px . Looking at the cropped image displayed in the widget, we used the Grab utility to cut the same portion from the original image and found that it was roughly 450x575px. We loaded this into the media library and made it the new featured image for the post and that image appeared almost exactly in the Homepage widget (couldn’t tell if it had been altered/cropped).
So, from that experiment it looks like an image size of roughly 450x575px is the sweet spot (unless the featured image will appear in the Homepage Big Slider).
Shroote, does this sound about right?
You’re right about big slider, other thumbnails are in 3:2 ratio, few thumbnails are generated by theme, biggest one is 950×633. I don’t remember where it is used, I could find out, but probably that’s not necessary.
Thanks Shroote. Ahhhh, the standard way to describe pixel dimensions is width x height not height x width as I described above.
Thumbnails are in 3:2 ratio width x height. That is simple!
So, if the source image is not in that proportion, it looks like WordPress is using the width of the original as the starting point and then the height of the image is cropped equally on top and bottom to arrive at the desired 3:2 proportion. Then this cropped image is resized, maintaining the 3:2 proportion to fit in the space allocated in the frame, in our case, the Homepage Highlights Widget. Does that sound right?
Yes, you’re right.
