post formats, language, tagline and subscribing

    Hi,
Shelf works really well for my haiku blog, but there are a few issues:

    1. I use the standard, photo and quote post formats depending on how I want to display my haikus. The photo and quote ones are shown as menus on the upper left hand corner, which doesn’t make any sense with my blog. Is it possible to remove them?

    2. I write my blog in Finnish so I chose Finnish as language, with the result that some of the text on screen changed into Finnish, but not all – most pertinently not the “You can scroll the shelf using arrow keys” text. Would it be possible to manually change that into a different language?

    3. I chose a tagline for my blog, but it just won’t show. What’s up with that?

    4. A couple of people have told me that they haven’t been able to subscribe to my blog (which has also happened with my other blog, http://www.nojatuolihaahuilija.wordpress.com). They’ve subscribed, but failed to get the blog posts in their email. Most people have not experienced any problems with subscribing so I wonder whether this issue only affects some operating systems or devices etc.? Or is there something wrong with my settings?

I hope you you’ll be able to help me with these issues!

    Best regards,
    Satu

The blog I need help with is nojatuolihaikuilija.wordpress.com.

Actually the tagline problem was just resolved as I happened to open “Theme options”, under which I found the “enable tagline” option.

In the Customize menu there was no mention of the need to specifically enable the tagline in a completely different menu. Maybe all that is obvious to tech-savvy people, but for the rest of us that just seems like an unnecessary complication. It would be a lot easier if everything concerning the same issue was found in the same place.

    Hi there!

    1. You can make the automatic format links in the top navigation go away by assigning a custom menu to that location.

    2. Unfortunately, the translations for Shelf are still a bit spotty, especially in Finnish. However, WordPress.com has recently made it fairly easy to update and improve theme translations. Here’s the one for Shelf in Finnish.

    3. Glad you got this figured out. Sorry for the confusion there. Your feedback is appreciated.

    4. The blog subscription feature is not specific to the Shelf theme. I’ll loop in a WordPress.com staff member to help with this question.

It would be easiest to troubleshoot this with a Happiness Engineer privately. You can start by sending along 4-5 email addresses of folks who subscribed but did not receive the notification of your post. Be sure to include the URL of the site to which they subscribed. That’ll allow staff to trace those email addresses. Send the email to support AT wordpress DOT com and someone will get back to you.

Initial troubleshooting steps would be to ask those folks to check their spam filters – or the Social, Promotions, or Newsletters tabs in Gmail – to make sure the confirmation email or notifications aren’t caught there.

Just let me know if you make any additions to the Shelf translation in Finnish and I can make sure they are deployed (go live).

    Hi Corey and Kathryn,

    THANK YOU for your help!
Indeed, the automatic format links went away after I set up a custom menu, yippee!

Also, Kathryn, I provided the missing Finnish translations for Shelf. I will probably still fine-tune them in the future, perhaps change a term or two (I’m a linguist, I can’t help it!), but they’re perfectly alright for now.

Before I contact a happiness engineer I’ll make sure it’s not the email settings that are causing the problem with subscription.

    Thank you again!

Satu – the Finnish translations you added for Shelf have been deployed and you should see them live on your site. Thank you for contributing!

Actually, I just checked and the translations were not yet live on my site.

Just as well as I have a bit more time today so I’m going to tweak some of the translations a little bit. You see, it hadn’t even occurred to me that I could also change the interface language into Finnish, I only realized that today, and now I want to make sure I use the same terms for the Shelf translations.

    Thank you for your help!

Ah, I see what you mean, that’s strange. OK, just let me know when you’ve finished your tweaks and I’ll ask for another deployment and we’ll make sure they actually go live this time. Thanks!

Ok, I’m done with my corrections! I didn’t have to do as many as I had thought so it went quickly..
Now the terms are the same as the ones already in use in WordPress.

    Take care!

I’ve asked our internationalization team to deploy your translation tweaks and take a look at why strings are still showing in English on your site. I’ll keep you posted here.

Hi Satu – your translations should now be appearing on http://nojatuolihaikuilija.wordpress.com/
