Portfolio and Text Block Placement Assistance

Hello, I am trying to make my opening page look like the image that is used to promote the minimum theme. I finally have images in the portfolio section, but it is also posting text from my blogs. I just want to show images here. Does this mean that I have to recreate pages, or posts, with images only, or is there a way to show only the images?
I also like the look of the text block next to the featured image. How do I activate that area?

That didn’t tell me any more than I already know.
The featured post widget you have placed there has settings to show “no content”. Pick that to remove the text.

ugh. actually, that didn’t help. There are too many variables. I will figure it out, I hope. I am finally mostly satisfied with the appearance.
