Page Loading glitch?

    When I visit my site, there seems to be loading glitches that happen at the front page.

    These are the components that seem to flash with one thing then it becomes the final thing, i.e.:

    – the featured post/image on the left side begins as the default image that comes with Largo, then flashes/settles to become the one I have loaded

    – the welcome title, welcome text, and post titles flash as one font or is in bold, then it flashes/settles into the font as I expect it to be.

    – come to think of it, for all my posts, the featured image is blank at first (to what I think is the default color) then the featured image shows up.

    The end result is correct, but I have tried several things to fix this. I removed then reloaded the featured image on my one featured post. I removed then reloaded the welcome title & text for the site’s front page. I updated my OS in case it was just my computer’s issues. I removed all wordpress cookies thinking that might have been it. It’s not resolved, though. Any ideas?

    FYI, when I change back to the default fonts for my site, that glitchy experience doesn’t happen anymore. I prefer the fonts I’ve chosen for headings (Futura PT, Light Italic, Normal) and for the base font (Source Sans Pro, Normal).

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the detailed message. It sounds like it could be with the chosen font. Sounds like you have the design upgrade to choose fonts.

    Since this is WordPress.com functionality, I have included the WP.com staff on this thread to see if they can shed some light on this question.

    They should be in touch soon.
    Thanks,
    Angela

    Hi Angela!

    Thanks for getting back to me. I keep messing with things to come up with a solution. I am approaching a solution for that default landscape image that pops up behind the featured image post on the left… I am close to figuring that one out. I went into customizer, then chose “Colors & Backgrounds” and there I found that landscape picture that kept flashing as my site loaded! I have replaced it with the image I want to show. I’ll keep messing with it, as the images aren’t aligned correctly, so it still has a loading issue. But, I’m getting there.

    Looking forward to info on the font issues. I’d like them to load smoothly as well.

    :)

    OK, I chose “hide background image”, that may have fixed the glitch with my blog as the site loaded. The image is stable now, just need to figure out the fonts not having a “blip” or glitch during the load.

    In terms of the font, when we recently added free Google fonts to all sites across WordPress.com, we changed the way web fonts are loaded. On slower connections, we used to show a blank page before the content loaded – now, we display the content in the theme’s default font first, so no one sees a blank page. We realize this means that there may be a flash of a different font before the page finishes loading, but we think overall this is better for folks on slower connections than seeing a blank screen.

    This CSS snippet should return your site to the previous behaviour on loading:

    .wf-loading body {
      visibility: hidden;
    }

    Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks for checking in. The CSS snippet did the job. It takes a little longer to load, but it loads better than it did when it looked glitchy. All resolved, I think. Thanks! ~mrk
