Mobile version showing up instead of full version on desktop computer
Hello! I am having an issue with the mobile version of my site showing up instead of the full version on a desktop computer, and there does not appear to be any link to switch to the full version view. I am using the Watson theme. I disabled the mobile options from the dashboard, but doing so did not make a difference. Help! Thank you … !
The blog I need help with is: thoughttonic.com
Watson is a responsive theme. This means it scales to the width of your browser window, so it looks great across all of your reader’s devices.
You cannot, unfortunately, disable this feature. I’m sorry if this isn’t what you’re hoping to hear :(
No, I don’t have a problem with the feature in itself. Let me see if I can explain more clearly … The problem is that my site is showing up in what appears to be a mobile version versus as the full site when I am looking at it on a desktop computer, i. e., via a full-width, regular desktop-sized computer browser window (please note that I have NOT had this problem with my site prior to this afternoon). When I say the site appears to be a mobile version, I say this because the sidebar is gone and all the information that was to the right of posts is now at the bottom of the page, the featured images are gone from next to posts, etc. Does this make sense? Thanks … !
Scott, I looked at another site that is using Watson (carrierubin.com) and see the same issue there … I see the mobile version, even though I’m looking at the site on a regular, full-sized desktop computer screen. I understand Watson being a “responsive” theme … it seems that Watson is responding as if I am using a mobile device, even though I am not. And again, this has not been an issue before today. Thanks again … !
Scott R., some additional information for you here, in case it is helpful … I’m on a different computer (a laptop versus a desktop), using the same browser (IE — not certain yet if it is the same version), and my site is showing up fine, just as I would expect … as the full site. Why would my site be showing up as a mobile version on the other full-sized, regular screen when it wasn’t previously? — Scott K.
Hi again :)
Thanks for the detailed information! What you are describing is indeed Watson’s responsive design.
Why would my site be showing up as a mobile version on the other full-sized, regular screen when it wasn’t previously?
Are you viewing this on a low resolution screen; for example, 800px x 600px? Can you please try expanding your browser to display the full-width of your screen?
If you scale down your browser’s window, you’ll see the theme respond to the different widths. The specific breakpoints you’ll see are set at 900px and 600px.
Scott, I’m still having the issue of getting the mobile version today on this particular computer, but screen resolution is set for 1680 x 1050! This resolution should be high enough to get the full-site version of my site rather than the mobile version, right?
Hi again :)
Yes, a screen with a resolution of 1680 x 1050 should be displaying the full-width version of Watson. What browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc.) are you using when you see the mobile version?
Sorry for the inconvenience!
The browser that is posing the problem is Internet Explorer 8 (and, again, the problem only just started; previously, things were fine). On a different computer/screen, Internet Explorer 10 is working fine.
Watson has limited support in Internet Explorer 8 and, as a result, will default to the mobile view. As you mentioned, your site should look and function perfectly in Internet Explorer 9 and above.
I hope this helps :)
I’m just curious — why did my site show up as the full site in IE8 before, but then, all of a sudden, no longer?
