    Hi, I’ve been having a problem with tables not working properly. The HTML code is good, it displays properly in the Visual editor mode but then falls apart when published. I have been discussing the problem here:

    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/linen-crazy-tables?replies=7#post-746990

    Here is an example page where basic tables won’t format properly on my site:
    http://ecconnor.wordpress.com/designs/chairs/maloof-inspired-lowback-chair/

    You can see on my site that tables won’t display properly in Linen. I’m temporarily going to use the margin workaround, but need to use tables for my formatting. Please advise ASAP.

    Hey again,

    Unfortunately, I can’t figure this one out. For some reason your inline valign=”top” is being overridden by the stylesheet, and I don’t know how to change that other than what I suggested in the previous topic, which is purchasing the Custom Design upgrade and adding this style:

    table, caption, tbody, tfoot, thead, tr, th, td { vertical-align: top; }

    Beyond that, we’ll keep looking for a solution. Sorry for the inconvenience, and sorry I couldn’t help more with this – I’m stumped.

    Hi, Thanks for your continued looking into this.

    There seem to be multiple problems with the tables not limited to the valign issue (borders too). Is this a problem limited to me or are others with this theme having the same issue? I really don’t want to purchase the Custom Design upgrade just for basic formatting issues and I don’t want to change themes at this point. Is this a bug which may be resolved soon?

    Hi there!

    I’m sorry to hear your still having issues with your table layout. I’m not aware of any other users having this problem. I will look into this further, and be sure to let you know if I come up with a fix.

    In the meantime, I would suggest looking over Drew’s solution provided in the previous topic.

    I believe setting out your layout within tables is causing this issue. I would recommend using the alignment tools found to the top of your post editor.

    Sorry for the trouble. Thanks!

    Thanks scottrollo,

    The fix posted earlier with the margin tag works OK for one image and text. What I really want is a 2 column layout stacking images on the left with supporting copy on the right. Easy to do in table but not quite as easy with the layout tools. Let me know if this is limited to me or whether its a widespread thing.

    I really need to be able to use tables for my layouts.

    Hi there!

    I’m sorry for all your trouble. We’re currently looking into this issue to see if we can help you further.

    I would suggest spending some time experimenting with the WordPress alignment feature; it is a very flexible tool. What you’re after is very easy to set up with the alignment options.

    When you upload your image to WordPress, select the option to align ‘Left’, please refer to this screenshot.

    Add your text to the right of your image. This will float your image towards the left, and your body copy to the right. I have attached a screenshot of the result.

    I hope that I’ve helped. Let us know how you go!

    I got the side margin like in your screenshot working a little while back. It gets me somewhat started but doesn’t address the real problem. Here’s a screenshot of what I’m really after: Image on left, thumbnails below it. Column of supporting text to the right of it.

    Any suggestions on how to accomplish this? I can code this adeptly in minutes with tables and hate to keep pushing this but it seems like a piece of broken functionality not having them working properly.

    Hey there,

    I still don’t know why on earth the inline “valign” property is not working, but I MAY have found a fix.

    Try adding a non-breaking space to the top of each of your td elements:

    <table>
      <tbody>
        <tr>
          <td>&nbsp;
             <a href="http://yoursite.com/2011/11/maloofchair31.jpg"><img src="http://yoursite.com/2011/11/maloofchair31.jpg?w=300" alt="" title="maloofchair3" width="300" height="225" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-83" /></a>
          </td>
          <td>&nbsp;
            Your Text Goes Here
          </td>
        </tr>
      </tbody>
    </table>

    For whatever reason, that is fixing the layout in Chrome for me. Try it out and let me know how it goes!

    OK, this seems to be working better. Still no border tags but the basic table structure is working. It doesn’t seem like a browser thing to me but it’s rendering fine in Firefox.

    Here’s the problem though. If you toggle between Visual mode and HTML view it strips out the   and then your formatting is all hosed again.

    Dang, you keep throwing me curveballs :).

    Ok, this is admittedly a really ugly workaround, but try replacing the   with this:

    <span style="color: #ffffff">&nbsp;</span>

    For some bizarre reason, the editor doesn’t seem to completely strip it out – it will remove the nbsp, but the span stays – and that’s enough to make the layout work.

    Try it out, let me know how it goes.

    OK, this isn’t the sexiest workaround but it does get me going. Thank you for your sticking with me on this. If you do get tables working properly in the future try to let me know so I won’t need to keep sticking white spaces in there.

    Thanks, Chris
