Lightbox on image posts

MemberOn posts of the Gallery format, clicking/tapping on an image shows the image expanded, and/or scaled to fit the visible part of the page, in a lightbox.
However, if the post is of the Image format, clicking/tapping on the image does not show it in a lightbox. The image in such a post can therefore not be expanded for a better view in the case of landscape images (example). If the image is a portrait image (example) it often extends beyond the visible part of the page and therefore can’t be seen in its entirety.
This is an odd omission for a theme for photographs. Is there a way to make an image in a post of the Image format appear in a lightbox?

Theme AuthorHi there – thanks for the message and sorry about the problems.
I am afraid the gallery and lightbox features are part of WordPress.com and not part of the theme. The way they work is the same in every wordpress.com theme and not something I can control.
As far as I know you can only use the lightbox if you add the image as part of a gallery, and not embedded as an image on it’s own
Sorry about that.
Thanks, @binarymoon. Here’s the explanation I got from a WP “happiness engineer”:
The carousel (what you refer to as the lightbox) is only available from images within galleries. This isn’t a theme limitation, but the way carousels work – they are tied to the gallery functionality.
For anyone who comes to this thread with a similar question, she also explains how to add a gallery with a single image to make the carousel appear for Image format posts.
