    I set up this website in July 2015 and managed to get it so that it automatically includes some posts on the homepage and also allows posts that you mark as sticky to appear on the homepage.

    I can remove the sticky posts by un-marking them as sticky, however I have been unable to figure out how to edit the settings for the posts that are appearing based on their category. None of the Homepage widgets appear to having any options to edit the category.

    Any help much appreciated, I have spent many hours today trying to figure it out.

    I think you have static page as your homepage. Go to “WP admin” -> “Settings” -> “Reading”, and set “Front page displays” option to “Your latest posts”. Then only posts from widgets will be visible on front page.
