Hero Slides Sizing

Hi, I’m using the soundcheck theme and having a hard time getting jpg images to fit into the slide space. I used an image editor to resize them to your recommend 1600 x 440 px but then it only shows a portion of the image zoomed in or the image does not fully fill the space for the slide.

What should I do to size my images to completely fill that space while displaying my entire image?

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is ordinarymagicmusic.com.

It’s a bit tough to troubleshoot without being able to see the site. Did you by chance set the image as a featured image?

Hi Luke, thanks for your response. Yes, it’s set as a featured image and I was able to get one photo image to fill the space properly, however, my other artwork – despite sizing to the proper pixels – won’t properly fill the space.

I can set you as a viewer if you let me know an email to put in for viewing privileges.

I notice a number of others have posted on this same topic but none of the posts give tips about how to resolve the problem – so I’m thinking this is a common issue with the theme. Can you list what types of resolutions might work?

    Thanks!

The theme demo sets a featured image with a size of 1600×440. The navigation menu does overlay the bottom of the image about 40px. There is also a border that overlays the top of the image about 8px. This may appear to make the image seem zoomed in?

If you added an image to the content area, you’ll want to remove that.

If you can make the site public temporarily, I can take a quick look and get a better idea of what is going on.

Hi Luke, I made gave you permission to view the site.

If you look at the image that has just our names and band name I am 100% sure that image was set to the recommended pixels so that could give you the best idea of how the problem is working.

The photo that you will see looks like it fits the space correctly – but actually the entire photo is not showing – it’s centered nicely which is a happy accident but there is a lot of the image trimmed all around and the photo is zoomed in. It’s way more missing than the small number of pixels you mention for the border and menu.

    Thanks for your help!

The first slide I see has an image (om-at-hawaiian-brians-nov2015.jpg) of two musicians (maybe you?) that spans the entire width of the hero slider as expected. The actual size of that image is 3264×2448 pixels. WordPress crops this image to be 1600×440 to fit the space.

The second slide I see has an image (back-logo1.jpg) of some text of names and the band name on it. This image does not fill the entire width of the hero slider because the actual image size is 1123×400 pixels. The theme centers all images in the slider automatically.

That said, it doesn’t appear the second image was uploaded with the correct dimensions.

Hi again Luke, thanks. Yes, that’s me in the purple hat : )

The second slide you mention was definitely 1600 x 440 at the time of uploading. Something has happened along the way to crop it. Does WP always crop the images or only if they aren’t the correct size to begin with?

I will experiment with making the image larger and uploading it to see if it gets cropped again.

Let me know if you can think of anything else.

    Thanks!

WordPress uses the original image source and then resizes using parameters in the URL. Below is a link to the image used in the second slide:

    https://ordinarymagicmusicdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/back-logo1.jpg

When viewing that image, you’ll notice the dimensions are 1123×400.

If you upload a new image to be used, make sure update the featured image as well.
