    Taras, I’m back with a few more questions.

    1) I am setting up the 2nd featured page to include the three items in the About menu. I set it up as three columns. However, it does not make an excerpt and read more link. It include the full pages in three columns. I manually added an excerpt and it included only the excerpted text but not a read more link. I would like it to appear as it does on the demo.

    2) The recent post widget in the sidebar has nice formatting with space and a line between each entry. How do I include this name formatting on the popular posts and pages widget?

    Thank you very much for your time and assistance.
    Mike

    Hello Mike,

    “…I would like it to appear as it does on the demo.”
    – For the Featured Page when displaying a grid layout (using child pages), please use the More block to create excerpt in your child pages.

    “How do I include this name formatting on the popular posts and pages widget?”
    – The fastest way to format this widget would be by using this custom CSS:

    /* format the popular posts and pages widget */
    .widget_top-posts ul > li + li {
      border-top: 1px solid #e0e1e3;
      margin-top: 9px;
      padding-top: 9px;
    }

    Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Kind regards,
    Taras

    Thank you Taras. The CSS worked perfectly. I’m still having difficulty with the featured pages.

    I created the About using a custom url menu to make it non-clickable. I added the more tag in the three pages under About. When I set that as featured page 2 using three columns it stacks and repeats some of the pages. It also makes everything the color of the border.

    I’m leaving it live for a little while so you can see it.

    Thank you very much.

    Mike,

    Hm… I’ve just checked your site, and I see the issue. It’s not normal. Possibly, this issue is caused by one of the blocks which modifies the output of child pages on a core level.

    All child pages on a demo site at WordPress.com are built using blocks, and it does not break the layout. Also, I’ve just added the Group block to one the child pages, and it still works fine.

    Also, I’ve just tested the Featured Page section on a self-hosted WordPress instantiation, and I was not able to reproduce the issue.

    I’ve added the Columns block and the Group block to one of the child pages (preview of the child page) on a self-hosted WordPress instantiation, and the Featured Page section displays a correct layout.

    So, it seems like a WordPress.com specific issue.

    Let’s test something.

    On your child page (this one), could you please add the Paragraph block along with the More block before your main block. Here is a screenshot: https://snipboard.io/XiWZ6y.jpg

    Preview example using the Editor: https://snipboard.io/3ZVjxg.jpg

    Thank you,
    Taras

    Taras:

    I think I got it. I added the paragraph block above the group block but could not add a more block. When I delete the more block from the group block I can add the paragraph and more block above the group block as you requested.

    I toggled on the option to hide the excerpt from the main page.

    Everything now seems to be working and displaying correctly.

    Thank you very much for your help.

    I have a couple more questions:

    1) How do I bold or underline the title of the widgets in the sidebar?

    2) You gave me CSS code to hide featured images on posts and it works great. I can still manually add images. How do I do that for pages?

    Again, thank you for your patience and guidance. I very much appreciate your help.

    Hello Mike,

    “Everything now seems to be working and displaying correctly.”
    – This is great! The Block editor is still under an active development phase, so that’s why we can see weird issues sometimes but I am glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue with the content duplication on your homepage.

    “How do I bold or underline in the sidebar?”
    – By default, a widget title has bold style. To add underline style, please use this custom CSS:

    .sidebar-section .widget-title {
        text-decoration: underline;
        text-decoration-thickness: 2px;
    }

    “You gave me CSS code to hide featured images on posts and it works great. I can still manually add images. How do I do that for pages?”
    – Please try this custom CSS:

    .page:not(.page-template-front-page) .site-main .hentry > .entry-thumb {
        display: none;
    }

    Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Kind regards,
    Taras

    Taras:

    Thank you very much. You been so helpful and I’m very happy with the Fortune theme and how my site is coming together. For now you’ve answered all my questions. I need to do some more work and will probably be back with more questions.

    I do have one final question for now. I used shortcodes to create pages for recent posts and an index/archive of all posts. Is there a shortcode to make a top/popular posts page? I found the widget but not a shortcode for a page.

    Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
    You are very welcome!

    “I need to do some more work and will probably be back with more questions.”
    – Sure, not a problem :)

    “Is there a shortcode to make a top/popular posts page?”
    – I am afraid this is not possible at WordPress.com at the moment. There is a shortcode for displaying posts on pages but it does not sort the posts based on popularity.

    Kind regards,
    Taras
