Follow up spacing problems
-
Dear Binarymoon,
Thank you for your effort in helping solve the spacing problem. Although the homepage looks like in balance again, I have the impression that older articles are still suffering from a serious spacing problem. In this article for example we noticed that the spacing has changed dramatcially giving the article a rather amateurish look: http://fli.institute/2015/01/10/26032015-fli-seminar-urban-leadership-the-science-behind-vertical-gardens/The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Also in this article a spacing problem has changed the look and feel of the article: http://fli.institute/2015/01/08/1822015-pretend-city-symposium-the-psychology-needed-to-feed-children-well-2/

Also in the bottom part of this article a spacing problem has showed up: http://fli.institute/2015/01/07/712015-international-conference-on-the-history-of-anatomy/

Hi there – glad the issue is resolved (for the titles at least).
The issue with is with the font. For some reason it makes certain types of html spaces larger than they should be.
There are two solutions to this.
1) convert these special spaces into regular spaces. This will require editing the post, deleting the spaces that display incorrectly and then adding them back.
2) using the custom design add-on to change the font on your site. PT Serif with the size set to -1 is quite similar to the default font used.

I don’t understand….there is a problem with the default font of the site ? If this is the case, then it is a recent problem related to the other problem of the spacing….I don’t think we should be required to go back into ca 280 posts to manually correct a spacing problem we have nothing to do with, plus I don’t think we should be obliged to change default font. Someone somewhere made changes to the basic set up of this theme, and this change should be corrected. To force clients to do what you propose is quite strange.

I am sorry but this is just too terrible, we are finding more and more old articles with spacing problems (like: http://fli.institute/2010/11/03/the-breeschilde-summit-or-the-future-leadership-summit/). We have invested quite some time in setting up this site after purchasing your theme. The way these articles look is damaging to the image we wanted to have in this field. We have not given anybody the right to alter our txts. Where can we file an official complaint as this situation seems to require a more indepth or ‘official’ approach.

By the way, you first solution is not doable, as the spacing problem is not even visible when editing the older posts, meaning one can’t see the extra spaces in the txt when editing.
-
Hi yes I’m finding this problem with all of our articles at the moment. Is this another coding issue as these have begun to appear from around the same time as the title problems but were not resolved when the titles were.
-
Really sorry for the problems – this is definitely not intentional and I can promise nothing has changed within the theme that would cause this issue.
The problem is with the font itself – perhaps the people at Google updated the font and introduced this quirk. Unfortunately it’s not possible to tell what happened or why and so I am trying my best to resolve the problem.
I am now looking into changing the default font to a different one that doesn’t have this issue. I will make sure it looks as close to the current font as possible so that your website doesn’t change in appearance.

yeah – it’s this font, which is loaded from and controlled by Google.
http://www.google.com/fonts/#QuickUsePlace:quickUse/Family:Neuton
If they update it (which isn’t common but does happen) then it updates across all sites.
Loading fonts from Google is quite a common thing in web design. Since there’s only a tiny amount of fonts that are common on all computers (Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, and a few others) then we need to load the fonts off of an external site so that all users see the site in the same way. There are lots of services that offer this but Google is probably the most popular.
-
Oh – I’ve also submitted a new update for the theme which changes the default font. Just waiting for the theme team to ok it and then hopefully this problem will go away.
-
Thx for the info, but I fail to see how it is possible that people like you, who are professionally using this font, can not know that this font is ‘updated’, hereby ‘changing’ the spacing in probably thousands of txts. If Google updates a commerical font, they surely warn the community using it ?
-
Firstly – I don’t know if the issue is with Google or with wordpress.com or even with the web browser (since from my experiments it only seems to happen in Chrome). As such I don’t know where the blame lies.
Secondly – I am not aware of any service that lets you know when Google update their fonts.
Regardless – the font has now been updated to one that does not have this problem. Sorry again for the issues.
-
The new font leaves bigger white spaces between the lines on the homepage. Older posts seem now to have larger and smaller paragraphs. see here: http://fli.institute/2010/11/03/the-breeschilde-summit-or-the-future-leadership-summit/ Please compare nr 8 and the rest. Nr 8 is larger in font, whereas the next paragraphs have smaller fonts.

What also seems out of balance are the txts in the blew fields above each article. In the past the txt stood nicely in the middle of the blue fields, now the balance is gone and the txt stands too high up in the blue fields.
-
I’ve tweaked the theme, and will likely make some more tweaks in the future, to address some of the things you mentioned.
The only thing I can’t change is the ‘8’ since that is controlled through your blog post content. You will need to edit the blog post to correct that.

-
Thx for your constant support and willingness to help. About the ‘8’… as I couldn’t see a difference in txt format with the other paragraphs in the edit field, I used ‘clear format’ on the 8 paragraph and now it seems OK
