Fine tuning pages on my site
Hello. Love this theme but I’m using it a little different than others may use it (i.e., not as a food-centric site). I’m having difficulty with a couple of things. My “Motivational Corner” page (which has two categories under it) is one of the blog portions of the site; the other is “Musings.” Is there a way to not have the header image appear on those two pages? “All the Latest” is another moving target page that will have content added frequently.
When you hover the mouse on “Motivational Corner,” you see the two categories; however, when you click on Motivational Corner, it takes you to that page, and that’s all. However, I want the two categories to appear underneath. Is there a way to do that?
“All The Latest” is set up as a category, not a page. Is there a way to remove the header image from that page? In fact, I would like to remove it from all pages EXCEPT the home page. Is there a way to accomplish this?
There is a “CONTINUE READING” block in the demo for posts. How do I achieve this for my site?
How do I get the sidebar to show up on all pages EXCEPT the home page? And how can I have these pages in a two-column format?
Speaking of the home page, is there a way to have one portion static and another dynamic? For instance, I currently have a “Welcome” box on the home page, but I would like to populate the other 2/3rds of the page with dynamic content that changes frequently.
I know this is a lot to take in, but I thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
thanks for using this theme.
I can’t see your website, it is private. If you can, please make it visibly or make access for me so that i can check your website and see how i can help you further.
So sorry about that. I sent an invite to you.
no problem. I’ll take a look tomorrow and will write you back.
thanks for using this theme.
There are many questions from your side, i’ll try to help with the few that i can. Unfortunately i can’t offer support for the significantly changes to the theme.
First please read: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sweet-life/support/. We explained here all that can be done with the theme. There you can find answer on your question, how to make the two columns content.
For the “continue reading” button you need to add inside the post Editor – “more” . Find more about it here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
For the home page, answer is no, you can have the static page as it is inside the live preview and inside the footer you can have dynamic content using widgets. There is possibility to add inside the editor shortcodes to read your latest posts. Read more about it here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/. This way you can have also dynamic part on the home page.
Page template with the sidebar is “Default Template”, so choose this template for the pages you want to have sidebar.
Header image is included on the blog and categories page, so you have option to include it or not. For the pages where you don’t want the header image, use the “Full-width without header image” template.
Hope this helps,
Thanks for your input, Ana.
With the “more” button (which I already knew how to use and it was inserted in test posts), the message “Continue reading” does not appear when I refresh the page. Is this due to, perhaps, the site being private? If you will notice on all of the posts on the Motivation, Writing Tips, Musings, Appearances and Sharing the News that east post is truncated. This occurs regardless of whether the “full text” or “summary” radio button is selected on the reading settings. At the point of truncation, this is what appears on each post: […]. Unfortunately, a reader can’t click on that to continue reading; they would have to click on the post title.
Also Ana, if you as the theme author can’t assist me with customization, who can?
of course i assist when some problems appears. I wrote that i can’t assist in customising the theme the way you want if there are a lot changes needed to be done inside the theme to look the way you want and not like in the theme demo. I can assist to look the way it is inside the demo and with some small customisation things. Also i can advice you what you can do to accomplish things you want if there is some easy way to do this.
As i can see u are using here:http://vawriting.wordpress.com/motivational-corner/? page and the WordPress.com shortcode for the latest post. This is how it is done and i can’t change this, it is part of the WordPress.com shortocode, how they did it. Title and featured images are linked to the single post page so you don’t need the read more button. You can try different shortcode from http://en.support.wordpress.com/display-posts-shortcode/ to see what will fit the best. If you use for example this one [display-posts posts_per_page="20"] it will list your post titles. So there are lot of possibilities but we can’t change this because it isn’t part of the theme.
This is part of the theme:http://sweetlifedemo.wordpress.com/blog/, default post page where you write your posts the way you use to and there is “Continue Reading” button.
One more possibility If you need to really dig into customizing your WordPress.com theme (to change it significantly from the theme demo look) you can hire qualified developers to tweak your WordPress.com theme. WordPress.com is partnered with Elto, a WordPress.com customization service where you can pay theme customizers to assist you. Prices start at $39:
or if you need your site to look significantly different from the theme demo it is sometimes better to choose other theme that will fit more to your needs.
Let me know if that helps and if you need more help with setting up the theme to look the way in the demo.
Let me know if you will have questions that are part of the theme demo and i’ll gladly help with but for the more customization like significantly changes to the theme you will need to hire someone because it isn’t possible for me to help (i don’t have so much free time ;) ) with the customizing the theme to look the way you want. In short i can help with the questions that are part of the theme demo and if there are some small things you want to change but for more changes you will need to find your own way using some other theme or to hire someone.
All the best,
FYI, the shortcodes for Motivational Corner posts was put in after I couldn’t get the “Continue reading” to respond properly. I wish I had known that this theme was not all that I could use the way I wanted to; unfortunately, I’ve purchased it and there are no refunds so I’ll have to make it work.
You have 30 days refund period on WordPress.com, you can always use it and purchase another theme. Theme offers what you can see inside the theme demo. Of course you can do a lot more with theme but if you need significantly to change the theme you need to know how or to hire someone to do this for you.
What I can do is to add on the categories page the read more button and than you can use the theme categories page instead of short codes. I can add this in the next update if that is the main part you need.
I apologize, Ana. I’m not trying to be difficult. It really is a beautiful theme. Unfortunately, I don’t think it works for what I’m trying to do. I wanted the functionality to be a bit different and, at this time, I won’t be hiring anyone to customize it for me. If this were a true food-centric site with recipes, it would be perfect. I was too over zealous in wanting to use it for my purposes. I’ll request a refund and find something that may better suit my needs.
Have a wonderful week.
No problem and no worry. Good luck with your new theme and website :)
All the best,
