Favicon for Creative Portfolio theme
I’m using the new Creative Portfolio theme and love many of its features, but we seem to have lost the favicon when the site logo was introduced. A site logo does not reproduce well at the tiny size of a favourites icon. What gives? Is there any way I can still force the site to display a favicon on larger screens, or is this not possible?
The blog I need help with is: ktloghomes.wordpress.com
Please use site icons, it’s known as Favicon on WordPress.com. See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-icons/.
Hope this helps.
Hi, thanks for this.
I don’t believe you’ve answered my question though. It doesn’t seem to me that site icon, which is set to be 512 x 512 pixels (min) for this theme is anything like the same thing as a favourites icon (typically more like 16 x 16) for a browser bar.
Surely I should be able to have both? They don’t serve the same function at all.
I am sorry if I am unable to help on this. I’ll draw attention of WordPress.com staff as this issue is handles by them.
Hope they’ll able to help you to resolve it.
I would very much appreciate that, as it’s a true loss of functionality. A site icon and a favourites icon are fundamentally different things, and one should not replace the other.
Thank you for pushing this over to the WordPress.com staff!
The Site Icon functionality has not changed – its upload area was just moved over from the old WP Admin dashboard into the new Calypso one. The same graphic is used in several places at different sizes.
Thanks for this, but my complaint is about the favourites icon seemingly being replaced by the Site Icon. They don’t serve the same function. Why can I no longer seem to have a separate favourites icon for the browser bar? Favicons are typically very tiny and the graphics we would prepare for them are much less detailed than ones we’d create for a site icon.
There was never an option to upload a standalone favicon file on WordPress.com. Is it possible you’re referring to something on a self-hosted site, where you were running the WordPress software on your own hosting?
There has been a favicon icon in Settings > General of WP-Admin for years. I only work with WordPress.com, I don’t actually like the self-hosted version of WP for a number of reasons.
The Site Icon seems to have a different function to the original favourites icon in my opinion.

That was not specifically a favicon upload area — we called it a “Blavatar” when it was uploaded in that spot and recommended a size of at least 200px square. The image you uploaded there was used in the places it is now. We’ve renamed it Site Icon to better match WordPress core and recommend a larger size because the image looks better on retina screens in some places when the original is larger.
Thanks for this.
Fair enough. Either way, I don’t feel there is a good or adequate option now for browser bars on PCs and laptops. The ideal design dimensions for these should really be quite different. The move seems to be towards a single solution, when sometimes that isn’t always appropriate. Just where we are right now I guess. Thanks again.
No worries – I definitely hear you. We do have an enhancement suggestion to allow the ability to upload separate images for a favicon and one for other uses. I’ll add your vote to that for consideration in the future — it’s not a common request, but it will be recorded, and you never know. :)
Thanks for your feedback!
Wonderful, thank you!
