Does WordPress automatically compress images?

I’ve just switched from a text-heavy theme to the image-centric Massive Press theme and I’m wondering if I need to compress and optimize high-res photos myself (with something like RIOT) in order to have a fast load time or if WordPress automatically does that when I upload the photos. And if it does do it automatically, how much are the photos compressed by? (If it helps to answer that last question, I’m using mostly feature images.) Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: writelikerowling.com

WordPress automatically scales images accordingly, so there’s no need to compress them yourself. I’m not sure exactly home much WordPress compresses the images to be honest, but I’m sure that’s something you’ll be able to find on Google.

So does that mean it’s actually resampling the image (like taking a 500 KB image and reducing it to say 100 KB) – or is it simply “scaling” the image to fit the theme’s required dimensions? I want to make sure my blog isn’t taking too long to load (and therefore, losing readers) with all of the new high-res pics I’ve added.

WordPress actually generates new versions of your images based on what the theme requires for display purposes.
