I am trying to create the same look on my homepage as displayed in the theme template (scrolling (carousel) images and their text/link displayed in the grey within the image on the right)
I set my featured image(s) to the suggested 950×363 and checked static page in CSS but it is still not showing up. Any advice to achieve this look would be great!

I think i misunderstood your previous query.
To create same home page as our demo there is no need to set any page as a static page from reading settings. Just leave it default and follow process given below.
Creating the Slider is pretty easy. Follow the simple steps below to create a nice looking slider.
Step 1. Define a tag the slider will use to populate the posts in the slider. To do that. Go to Settings → Reading → Featured Content and add your tag name. If the tag you define doesn’t yet exist, it will be created for you.
Step 2. Create a new post with title, content and featured image.
Step 3. Tag the post with the tag which you created in Step 1.
The Slider will start to appear with the tagged post along with the featured image.
