    Hi!

    I would like to be able to clearly define the categories that each of my posts fall within – especially on the home page. Ideally under the featured slider I would be able to offer readers the opportunity to click through to the different categories on offer on the site . Currently I have them listed in the header menu and also a text category widget on the right hand side – but it would be great to be able to highlight them as an image click through.

    Alternatively – if this isn’t possible within the theme – would I be able to have the category displayed in the same (or similar) way as it does on the WP Olsen theme please? Above the post title?

    Thank you for any help you can give in advance
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
    thank you for writing and using our theme.

    Unfortunately both options can not be done using the standard WordPress.com modifications (CSS).

    However as your site is Business plan, you can get both by creating a child theme and coding the desired modifications; https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/uploading-setting-up-custom-themes/child-themes/

    It requieres coding skills but we can assist you if you need help.
    Please, let us know.

    Thank you again,

    Hi Ricardo!

    Thank you so much for getting back to me, that’s really helpful information.

    I am very interested in pursuing your suggestion of the child theme. But, I have ZERO coding skills. I would be able to install but not be able to write the code to make the amendments. With this in mind, please could you let me know how we take it forward from here?

    I also have a few more questions please:

    1. Will creating the child theme have any impact on the customisation I’ve already done within the existing theme?
    2. If I were to customise anything else after integration would that impact the child theme? I guess what I’m trying to find out is if I want to make a straightforward customisation change(say change the header image for example), do I still have access to the customiser as I currently do or do I have to be able to code every standard change going forward?

    Finally,

    3. Is there a potential alternative to display the category under the post title in my existing theme please? So post title – line with diamond through it – category?
    3a. If this is possible – would I be able to remove read time/date to just display the category?
    3b. Would I have any control over the style of Font when making this adjustment (at the moment text below the line is displaying in italic)?

    Really sorry to bombard you, but I do really appreciate your help and time

    Thanks in advance
    Alex

    Hi Alex.

    Yes, child themes can be a bit difficult to understand because they look like a single theme but actually they need the parent theme for all. Basically is like adding a layer that sets your modifications or customisations without touching the parent theme.

    We have created a child theme for your site with the desired modification of having the categories under the title and riding out the reading time and date.

    Here you are the link to download:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/o29klbaobuqzhc1/rosalie-lph.zip?dl=0

    Install it as a normal theme. Do not worry, you will not lost any content.

    About your question:

    1. Not, you will have the same configurations you have.

    2. Nothing. With your child theme installed you will be able to add more CSS using the Additional CSS (as you can do in this moment) and your Customizer. Deeper modifications can be added to this child theme.

    3. Unfortunately this modification can nor be done only with CSS. We need php and HTML through the child theme.

    3a. Yes. The child theme does this job too.

    3b. Yes, as a normal element of your website, justa add the CSS you need to change the style in your customizer. for example:

    .hentry.col-xs-12 .categories-links-index {
        font-style: normal;
    }

    Hope this helps :)

    Hi Ricardo

    Thank you so much for pulling this all together for me!

    I uploaded the theme successfully and before activating it, I selected ‘Try and Customize’ to get a view of it before making it live.

    The majority of my settings have been carried through correctly including the modifications you have made. But a couple have not e.g. site colours and header image. I tried to modify the colours whilst in customize-mode but don’t get the same options as the main parent site. Before I hit activate – please could you help me understand if the full set of customisation options of the parent theme will be available again after activation, because I don’t want to lose these.

    Many thanks for all of your help
    Alex

    Hello Alex,
    yes, it is a good idea to use the ‘Try and Customize’ .

    Well, theoretically it should keep all options, including the site colours and header image. But as each site is different because its configurations, plan and addons, let’s ask a WordPress staff member in order to confirm if any option in the customizer is missing for other reasons.

    I have just sent a ping, they will answer soon.

    Thank you again!

    Hey Alex & Ricardo,

    Thanks for your patience, we’ve been really busy the past couple of weeks.

    Ok, this is for Ricardo: the reason why the colors and backgrounds aren’t present in the child theme is because the code that adds the enhanced functionality in the Customizer looks for our annotations file in the theme (eg: inc/wpcom-colors.php). So, if you add the file from the base theme into the child theme, it should work.

    Try that and let me know!

    Cheers,
    Chris

    Fantastic Chris,
    Thank you for your instructions :)

    Alex, here you are the new version of the child theme. Please, delete the previous one before uploading this one:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/o29klbaobuqzhc1/rosalie-lph.zip?dl=0

    Could you please use the “Try and Customize” and let us know if all works fine?

    Thank you again for your patient :)

    Received with thanks Ricardo!

    Apologies for the delay in response I needed to carve out some time to dedicate to installing it.

    The colours are available now, which is great thank you!

    Before I press publish on it, please can you help me with one further thing? This is the current custom CSS I have:

    /*
    Welcome to Custom CSS!

    To learn how this works, see http://wp.me/PEmnE-Bt
    */
    /*Change non-Site Title Font*/
    .entry-title, .widget-title, .page-title, .reply-title {
    font-family: “Quattrocento Sans”, sans-serif !important;
    }

    .category .page-header {
    overflow: hidden;
    }

    .category .page-header .page-title {
    text-align: left;
    /*margin-left: -150px;*/
    text-indent: -178px;
    }

    @media (max-width: 575px) {
    .category .page-header .page-title {
    /*margin-left: -230px;*/
    text-indent: -113px;
    }

    /* Add space next to About image to push text below*/
    .wp-image-119 {
    margin-right: 150px !important;
    }
    }

    .entry-meta span.categories-links-index,
    .entry-meta span.tags-links,
    .entry-meta span.author {
    display: none !important;
    }

    .single .entry-meta {
    display: none;
    }

    .single .entry-thumbnail {
    padding-top: 10px;
    }

    .entry-summary p {
    max-height: 1px;
    overflow: hidden;
    }

    However, I cannot carry all of it over as it will erase the ‘category’ under the post heading (which is obviously the main reason for you kindly created the child theme for me) Please could you let me know what I need to carry over in order to:

    – Remove all of the author/category/tags/comments etc info when somebody clicks through on a post
    -Remove any description of the post under the featured image on the homepage (so basically – post title, category, featured image, read more button)
    – Remove the word ‘Catergory:’ from the category page. So Category: Beauty would just become Beauty.

    I believe the CSS for this already exists within the paste I’ve provided above, but I’m unsure which is which. Please accept my apologies for this.

    Additionally…

    – Is there a way to remove the line with the diamond through it from underneath the site header image please? I’m happy with it in all other areas.
    – And for some reason 2x Read more buttons appear under the first post on the home page (currently the post about animals)

    Sorry to bombard you again, as always your support and help is greatly appreciated.

    With thanks
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
    nice to hear that colors are working :)

    About you CSS, yes it does what you say. I have cleaned some lines, you can use this one instead the previous one:

    /*Change non-Site Title Font*/
    .entry-title, .widget-title, .page-title, .reply-title {
        font-family: "Quattrocento Sans", sans-serif !important;
    }
    .category .page-header {
        overflow: hidden;
    }
    .category .page-header .page-title {
        text-align: left;
        text-indent: -178px;
    }
    @media (max-width: 575px) {
        .category .page-header .page-title {
            text-indent: -113px;
        }
        /* Add space next to About image to push text below*/
        .wp-image-119 {
            margin-right: 150px !important;
        }
    }
    .single .entry-meta {
        display: none;
    }
    .single .entry-thumbnail {
        padding-top: 10px;
    }
    .entry-summary p {
        display: none;
    }

    About the diamond under the header image, add this CSS to remove both (line and diamond):

    .site-description:after,
    .site-description:before {
        content: none;
    }

    Finally, I am not able to see the double Read More button:
    http://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/4162/W8o81t.jpg (very strange issue). Have you used the “read more” tag?

    Hope this helps :)
