Cannot enable sidebar on index layout?

Just checking if I’ve missed anything out.
Went to Theme Options, selected the Default Layout I wanted (content + right sidebar), and hit Save Settings. Added a test widget into the Primary Sidebar widget area, and nothing happens – no sidebar at all. Is there some other setting that needs to be done for a sidebar to be displayed?
I then reverted the changes, since they didn’t work.
Would appreciate some advice here cheers.

The home page does not have a primary sidebar area – only the inner pages do.
THe home page is made up of its own widget areas which fill the page.
