what am i doing wrong? i am simply copying and pasting the source code into the text widget and clicking save. nothing changes on my site.

Hi – without seeing the code I can’t say for sure but I imagine you are trying to embed javascript which will not work on wordpress.com – javascript is disabled for security reasons.
In addition – unfortunately using third party advertising networks is against the advertising policy on wordpress.com – there’s more info here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/Note that this is a wordpress.com policy and is not specific to the theme.
If you want to have advertising on your site then it may be worth you applying for wordads – http://wordads.co/ – which is wordpress.coms advertising program.
No, it’s HTML and it’s an Amazon affiliate link which is acceptable. My husband has a free WordPress blog and I posted the banner there flawlessly using the Text widget as normal. The only difference in our blogs is that mine is a premium theme (it’s the Lens theme and I also purchased the Custom Design upgrade) and his is free. I’d use WordAds if they would accept me into the program lol! I can’t seem to catch a break.
